Jefferson County Bessemer Justice Center

Bessemer, AL

This project consists of a four-story, 153,000-square-foot courthouse, located directly across the street from the newly expanded jail facility.  The facility was designed for potential future growth, with the capacity for three additional floors built into the structural system. The building’s structural system was constructed of cast-in-place reinforced concrete, with conventionally reinforced beam-and-slab floors.  The foundations are a combination of spread footings and drilled piers bearing on rock.  The Justice Center and the Public Safety Building are linked by a cast-in-place tunnel for ease of access.  The Justice Center is the first in Alabama to be distinctly designed for blast mitigation and attack resistance.
